On the last Saturday of January, February and March, volunteers are needed for the 2012 Sanctuary Ocean Count hosted by the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary.

The sessions will be from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Jan. 28, Feb. 25 and March 31.

“Everyone is invited to get involved in this fun volunteer event,” said sanctuary spokeswoman Micki Ream.

Volunteers count the number of humpback whales seen around the islands over a four-hour period and record their behavior.

This year, the Sanctuary Ocean Count will be conducted at more than 60 shore sites around the islands of Hawaii, Kauai and Oahu. View locations, select the date(s) to participate and register online at http://sanctuaryoceancount.org.
